This piece was inspired by a stunning bunch of Australian natives that included banksia coccinea, also known as Scarlet Banksia.
This particular wildflower is full of texture and rich colours and I wanted to create a loose style of the surrounding foliage but keep banksia as a hero.
Banksia coccinea (scarlet banksia) is a shrub or small tree in the family Proteaceae with a distribution along the south west coast of Western Australia. The prominent red and white flower spikes appear mainly in the spring. The scarlet style is strongly recurved or looped until the flower fully opens.
This piece has rich reds and beautiful whimsy elements of foliage to create movement.
Acrylic on mdf.
